A penny for your thoughts

One of my new year’s resolutions is to be more fiscally responsible. We are fortunate not to have to worry about how we’re going to put food on the table or how we’ll be able to pay the mortgage this month, knock on wood. But every newspaper article and every news flash on the television reminds me that it can all change in a second.

As a couple, we have made financial decisions together and our joint finances are in order, but I’ve been thinking about what I could be doing differently with my personal account. More specifically, I’ve been thinking hard about savings.

I always came into money when I needed it. Never large amounts due to an inheritance or a lottery win. Just small windfalls that always managed to come when I needed them. Sometimes it was an unexpected tax return or a generous Christmas present. When I’d feel the tightening of the ol’ belt as they say, I’d race to enter any open writing contests. I wouldn’t win every competition, but I entered enough that I usually would win a cash prize at some point. And with whatever winnings and the money I made at various jobs throughout high school and university, I did ok.

As I’ve got older, those cash prizes are harder to get, mainly because so many of those competitions are only open to students. The small amounts of money I’d come into in my younger years wouldn’t have as great an impact now as they did back then, back when I just needed beer money until I could sell my textbooks at the end of term.

I need to remember that just because I can afford to spend the money I do have, I don’t have to. I should save more. If I’ve learned anything in my 29 years on God’s green earth, it’s that money makes money. (I’ve also watched my fair share of financial sage Suze Orman. “People first, then money, then things.” Got it.)

Between Groupon and LivingSocial and voucher codes galore, I don’t buy anything without searching for a better deal first. But getting a good deal has never been a problem. My dad always said, “You’ll go broke saving money.”

So, how about not buying it in the first place and just saving the money?

My sister used a ceramic Peter Rabbit bank for cash well after she got a bank account. The woman in the Shopaholic series froze credit cards in a block of ice in the freezer. During a particularly skint month, my friend gives a chunk of money to her mom and has her ration it out to her throughout the month. Another friend saves every £2 coin he comes across and deposits the lot in his account once a year.

What do you do?

I buy store brand everything, unless the name brand is on sale and is cheaper than store brand.

I diet. I notice high-fat foods in Ireland are more expensive and I end up giving up a lot of snack foods that I can’t eat.

I hit my mom up for some cash. This one works the best.

I have money sent directly into my savings account when my paycheck is deposited so that I never really see the money. In addition, my 401(k) deposit is set up to increase automatically by 1% annually. I’ve also become quite the fan of the consignment stores in my area. As I have lost weight, I have been able to replace my wardrobe at a lower cost by shopping at the consignment stores and been able to sell some of the items that are too large for me now. Like you, I have started to really consider my purchases too. I am less apt to buy things now unless I really have a need for them. If I decide to spend money now, it is more often on classes at the mixed martial arts gym (my new form of therapy) or on activities with friends..

Agreed! A lot of my extra money has been going to personal training sessions. Moving money around to various accounts right when you get paid is a great tip.

Do you have any tips for entering writing competitions? I love writing and have written lots of short stories/poems at uni.
Really enjoying reading your blog (found it when googling ‘where to buy canned pumpkin in the UK’! Now I know to try Waitrose… :) xx

Hi Catherine! Thanks for your comments. Glad I could help with procuring pumpkin over here! It’s still stocked in my Waitrose–seems to be year round now!

If you’re a student or under a certain age (usually under 25), there are lots of writing competitions out there. I just search online for writing competitions, student fiction competition, etc. I’ve also found a lot by looking at universities’ websites, often listed in the careers center pages or alumni jobs section. They list competitions/internships/jobs open to anyone. I’d also get the Writer’s Market book or see if you can look at a copy in a bookstore/library. I’ve yet to enter any competition you actually pay an entrance fee up front but so many of them require a fee for submission (especially if you’re older & not a student like me!)

I haven’t entered competitions since I was a recent uni grad but do dabble in freelance writing now. I found many of those opportunities through the same resources. Good luck!

I double my spare cash. It’s pretty easy… For every pound you borrow on a mortgage, by the end of the term you pay almost two. So, spare cash goes on the mortgage. It cuts the amount you pay back instantly – so far I have reduced my monthly payments by £200!

I had that problem too…feeling like buying a bargain was saving me somehow? Now I only buy a non-necessity (and I am honest with myself about what that means) if I am willing to part with a similar item, this goes for toys/clothes for V as well. It is amazing what I don’t end up buying with this trick!

I’m trying to do that as well. I have so much “stuff” and if I want more, I need to donate/sell something in exchange. Or at least that’s what I always intend to do. Hard to pass up a supposed bargain though! At least these days with so many money saving websites, it’s easy to find and use really worthwhile deals.

I make sure to always pay myself first in the form of retirement savings. If it’s sent to my retirement account before I see it, I don’t miss it.

Congratulations for having your finances in order and thinking more about saving!

Another vote for sending money to savings/retirement immediately after it hits your bank account. Great ideas, thanks!

How about this one: Clean Your Bedroom. One time when you were a teenager I could no longer stand the sight of your bedroom (even though the door was only open occasionally). While cleaning under your bed I found an uncashed paycheck of yours!! Remember??? Cha-ching! or, given that Scott is a neatnik and that is unlikely, maybe Clean Your Purse. I know you have some old cheeseburgers in there.
